Most yantras in homes were bought online or brought back from a trip, hung somewhere convenient, and left. In traditional practice that is a geometric print rather than an active yantra. Consecration is done through recitation of the mantra belonging to that yantra, along with the accompanying rite. What is recited differs by yantra: the Sri Yantra, a Navagraha yantra, a Kuber yantra and a Shani yantra each have their own, and using the wrong one is much like addressing a letter incorrectly.
Placement follows. Direction, height, the room and what the yantra faces are all specified, taking account of your home's actual layout rather than an ideal one. A yantra facing a bathroom door, kept below waist height, or set among ordinary ornaments is not placed in the traditional sense, however carefully it was consecrated.
Upkeep is the part that keeps it active. A yantra is kept clean and undisturbed, and generally given a regular observance — a lamp, incense, the mantra on a particular day. You are given something realistic rather than elaborate, and told plainly what would compromise it, including a household that stops observing it entirely for months.
