Maintenance rather than emergency
Almost everything on this site's protection pages is about responding to something. This one is about not needing to. Households that keep a simple practice tend not to accumulate the heaviness that brings people to a cleansing in the first place, and the practices involved are small enough to be genuinely sustainable.
The core of it is the threshold. In traditional practice the entrance is where the household's boundary is maintained — hence the lemon and chilli at the door, the salt, the lamp lit at dusk, the habit of removing shoes. These are not superstitions performed for their own sake; they are boundary maintenance, and they are effective in the traditional understanding precisely because they are done daily rather than dramatically.
For the person rather than the house, the practice is usually a mantra held at a consistent time, a weekly observance, and specific habits for people whose circumstances expose them — those working in hospitals, care homes, funeral services, courts or policing, where contact with distress and death is constant, and who in this tradition are understood to carry a good deal home with them.
What is prescribed is set to your chart and, more importantly, to your actual life. An elaborate practice that lasts three weeks protects nobody. Master Vijay Ram would rather set something modest that you keep for years, and will adjust it whenever it stops being realistic.

A clear, caring path
How protection is set up
Protection is set up by assessing the actual exposure, establishing threshold and household observances, then setting a personal practice short enough that you will genuinely keep it. It is ongoing upkeep rather than a one-off rite.
Assess the exposure
What is likely to bring heaviness in — the work you do, the state of the home, visitors, an ongoing difficulty — since protection is shaped by what it is protecting against.
Set threshold and household practice
The entrance observances, lamp, salt and weekly rite are established for the home, with each explained so you know why it is done rather than only that it is.
Set a personal practice you will keep
A mantra and daily observance suited to your chart and pitched at a level you can sustain indefinitely, with adjustment whenever life changes.
Do any of these sound familiar?
When protection is worth setting up
Best begun before there is anything to clear.
- A cleansing has been done and you want to keep the result
- Your work brings constant contact with illness, death or distress
- The household includes young children or an elderly relative
- There is a great deal of traffic through the house
- A difficult period is running and you want something in place
- You want simple practices to teach the whole family
